Kentucky blueberry growers produced more than 20,000 pounds of certified organic blueberries in 2016. Farmers can earn $4 per pound wholesale and $6 or more direct marketing organic berries. OAK and Bluegrass Blueberries will host an organic blueberry-growing field day at 618 Roy Thomas Road, Bowling Green, KY 42103, on Thursday, September 15 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. (central time), just in time for getting new plants in the ground.

Bluegrass Blueberries owner Jeff Essig will teach how to prepare, plant and care for blueberries, covering fertilizing, watering, organic sprays, worm casting treatment and so on. You’ll also learn how to extend your blueberry crop, and increase income potential, by selecting varieties that ripen from May through July.

An organic lunch will be served. Registration is required and is $5 for OAK members; $10 for non-members.
